After a pretty stale Monday night there was little to stimulate the morning conversation at Ladbrokes News HQ but the site of #HairObsession at the top of the twitter trends list – albeit a promoted hashtag – got us reminiscing about famous football hairdos.
To be honest we could still be talking about it now, what with their being numerous dodgy barnets over the years, but we quickly narrowed it down to a top five.
There was no place for Taribo West, an early United Cristiano Ronaldo, the mulleted Chris Waddle or even the long hair and crazy beard combo of USA legend Alexi Lalas but you can still vote of any of these or anyone else you think we’ve overlooked by selecting “other” in the below poll and leaving your comments.
So, without further ado the five shocking cuts we’ve opted for are as follows:
Abel Xavier – Blonde everything
Dyeing your beard is supposed to be a private, clandestine affair that takes place behind a locked bathroom door and is never spoken of in public.
Xavier didn’t get the memo however and opted for this … erm interesting look during his Liverpool days.
Carlos Valderrama – Just big and blonde
Capped by his country 111 times Colombia’s Valderrama was more than just a figure of fun, being named South American Footballer of the year in 1987 and 1993.
He can count the French Cup, Colombian Championship and MLS Supporters’ Shield among his carer honours but he’ll forever be known mainly for this …
Jason Lee – The Pineapple
Lee’s list of clubs is almost as long as Valderrama’s hair and while the 6ft3in striker enjoyed a solid enough career – only hanging up his boost three years ago at the age of 40 – like the Colombian he enters Premier League folklore for his chant-inducing “pineapple”.
Ronaldo – The Patch
Long before Cristiano was on the scene Ronaldo was already a megastar name thanks to the Brazilian striker.
His fancy footwork lit up the football world and helped him win 13 major domestic trophies and two World Cups.
It was on the international stage – the 2002 World Cup final to be exact – that his hairdo made headlines though.
Legend has it he left his hair tufty at the front so his son could recognise him more easily from the stands but even if that is true it’s still a shocking do!
Rudi Voller – The Poodle
Voller may just be a victim of time as the mullet was all the rage back in his 1980s heyday but the combination of this look, worn looser than him than by most, his ashy blonde hair and the matching ‘tache made him look like a Liverpool fan who’d been left behind in Bremen!
