Never one to play down his achievements, reputation or credibility, Floyd Mayweather Jr has claimed the “world will stop” when his super fight with Manny Pacquiao takes place on May 2.
After years of wrangling, the fighters, their respective TV backers – HBO and Showtime – and all promotional parties have put their differences to one side to make the fight that boxing fans have been clamouring for.
With the fight expected to generate around $300m (£200m), 60 per cent of which will go to unbeaten Mayweather, both men stand to make a pretty penny from the bout.
But with these two, this fight is not about the money (even if the Pacman does have a multi-million dollar tax issue to resolve), it’s all about cementing a legacy and answering the question that has been on fight fans’ lips for the last five or six years.
The fight may be taking place when both men are past their peak, but there isn’t another match-up on the planet that would generate this much excitement.
