Poll: Is Matt Phillips’ strike the goal of the season so far?

Published:

The battle for Premier League survival is really heating up, the European struggle is taking shape, and don’t tell Arsene the title race is over. But the tussle we are interested in today is for Goal of the Season so far…

We were spoilt at the weekend by a couple of crackers (both make our shortlist), but this Premier League campaign has featured an abundance of world class strikes.

We’ve picked our favourite five to fight it out.

You can choose your winner in the poll below, but jump straight down to the comments section at the bottom of the page if you feel with missed one out.

Here is our quintet of contenders…

Matt Phillips vs Crystal Palace

Described by some as better than that famous David Beckham strike against Wimbledon all those years ago, Phillips’ piledriver from 40 yards has to make it on the shortlist.

It was just a shame that QPR were already 3-0 down by this point…

Olivier Giroud vs West Ham

After their 3-0 victory against West Ham, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger described how his side were not yet in the title race, but give it time and they will be.

The hosts got off the mark at the weekend with this classy one-touch (until Giroud spoiled that aspect) team goal.

Ayoze Perez vs West Brom

Like the Giroud entry, Newcastle’s goal against West Brom back in November was built around a nice passing move, but it was the finish that made it special.

Lurking near the penalty spot, the Spaniard met the cross with an instinctive flick that surprised the Baggies back-line.

Philippe Coutinho vs Southampton

We’re rounding our list off with a couple of long range thunderbolts, starting with Philippe Coutinho’s effort at St Mary’s.

What was taking about the strike was the dip that the Brazilian manufactured onto his shot to creep into the net via a glancing blow of the crossbar.

Enner Valencia vs Hull

Achieving such power with so little back-lift, Enner Valencia deserves his place in the top five.

Twice coming back from a goal down the Hammers were able to rescue a point at the KC, with the Ecuadorian’s strike getting them on their way.
