Pochettino’s Tottenham prayers to be answered by Saints star

Only days after bemoaning his side’s cavalier defending in their rollercoaster win over Leicester, Mauricio Pochettino will be delighted to hear the latest news.

Atletico Madrid centre-back Toby Alderweireld, currently on loan at top-four rivals Southampton, has offered a huge clue over where he sees himself playing next season.

“I would like to play with Jan Vertonghen again,” said Alderweireld. “But a transfer will be arranged later, not now. Atlético will decide my future, but I would like to stay in the Premier
League. That some of the big clubs show interest proves I’m doing well.”

Clearly, the lure of White Hart Lane is increased by slotting in next to his old pal Vertonghen in the centre of the Lilywhites defence.

The pair are Ajax alumni, where they forged an understanding which translated into two Eredivisie titles.

Although the duo eventually went to different clubs off the back of their success in Holland, as Belgian international teammates they’ve obviously remained close.

The prospect of the pair complimenting each other again at the Lane is sure to excite Pochettino and Spurs fans in equal measures.

Alderweireld has played a key role in forging the Premier League’s meanest defence at St.Mary’s, while Spurs have leaked like a badly-installed shower for large parts of the season.

Only four sides in the division have conceded more than Pochettino’s men, who would surely be better off than 12/1 shots for the top four had they been able to tighten their collective belts.
