From Murray to Maguire: England’s top 5 Scottish sportsmen
Overwhelming favourites for victory in this weekend’s Six Nations clash, there was a time when contests between England and Scotland were close run things.
But while Stuart Lancaster’s side can take plenty of positive from recent results – besides that defeat to Ireland – Scotland visit Twickenham having recently lost to Italy and in danger of picking up the wooden spoon.
Despite the rivalry that exists between the two nations, it is still difficult to see this once great team suffering hard times.
With that in mind, we felt it was high time someone stood up and celebrated some of the excellent sportsmen this great nation currently boasts.
Here are England’s five favourite Scottish sports stars.
5. Stephen Maguire
Ranked in the top 16 for a decade, the 33-year-old Glasgow-born favourite has risen to as high as 2nd in two of those seasons. Semi-finalist in the UK Championship and German Masters this season, Maguire has already picked up the Six-Red World Championship and looks primed for more.
4. Danny Brough
A Super League star with Huddersfield Giants, Brough has also starred for the Scotland national side, leading the team at the 2014 European Cup where his impressive displays earned him the coveted Player of the Tournament Award in the process. A rugby league legend.
3. Stephen Gallacher
Winner of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic for two years running, the 40-year-old was one of Paul McGinley’s three wild card picks for the Ryder Cup last year and did not disappoint, helping the European team to a famous five-point victory over their US rivals.
2. Steven Naismith
In a season where Everton have largely underwhelmed in the Premier League, the 28-year-old former Rangers and Kilmarnock man has been a steady source of inspiration, scoring seven goals in all competitions including some crucial strikes in the Europa League.
1. Andy Murray
A two-time Major winner who finally put the ghosts of Henman Hill and Rusedski Ridge to rest by winning Wimbledon in 2012, Murray may well rank as the most successful Scottish sportsman of all time and has been crucial to Team GB enjoying any success at the Davis Cup – cheers Andy!
