Meet the Dutchman who could shine in Man United’s 4-3-3 system

Published:

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal could be set to launch a bid for PSV star Memphis Depay now his Red Devils side have settled on a 4-3-3 system.

Van Gaal tinkered with his formation for much of the early part of the season, a result of both injury and unfamiliarity with his squad, but United have settled into a 4-3-3 system of late, with Wayne Rooney reaping the benefits of playing up front.

The fruits of this were clear for all to see as the Red Devils were rampant in their 3-0 win over Tottenham at the weekend and now a system has been settled on Van Gaal is said to be clearer on where his summer shopping will take place.

The United boss is a keen admirer of Depay, having placed his faith in the 21-year-old at last year’s World Cup and the attacker’s continued rise to prominence in Eindhoven means a bid is now more than likely.

PSV boss Phillip Cocu is resigned to losing the player, who has smashed 16 goals in 19 Eredivisiegames this season, recently saying: “At some point, it becomes clear that he is ready for the next step, and yes, I think he’s going to leave PSV after this season.”

United will face competition from Tottenham to sign the young Dutchman and much will depend on the outcome of this season’s race to qualify for the Champions League.

However, after serving as a mentor in Depay’s early career it stands to reason that Van Gaal will hold more sway over the player’s decision than Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Next up for United is a daunting trip to Anfield to face an in-form Liverpool side. The Red Devils go into the game as underdogs at 9/4, but win in front of the Kop and the Old Trafford side will move a step closer to a return to Europe’s top table and the potential signing of the exciting Depay.
