It was a Cheltenham Festival week that started so well for punters but since that marvelous Ruby Tuesday things have started go a little pear-shaped.
Not that we were too busy celebrating the incredible Willie Mullins-Ruby Walsh successes in the Gloucestershire sunshine.
We’re all about the hunt for value and in this final Longshot Lucky 15 of the Festival we’re hoping we’ve recaptured our very own winning formula.
Back these four selections each-way and end Cheltenham 2015 on a high.
Trainer Alan King has described his charge as ‘rock solid and battle hardened’ and that’s the perfect way to sum this horse up.
He’s been narrowly behind market fancies Peace and Co and Hargam this season but only by a combined total of 4¼l, suggesting that his place claims are pretty strong.
Whatever the weather, he’s gone well on different types of ground and while he may not have the flat-out pace to win the race he’ll certainly be there or thereabouts.
Also fancied by one of our fine colleagues, Carraci Apache is just the kind of progressive type we love.
Nicky Henderson’s runner was an extremely game winner of the Grade 2 River Don Novices’ Hurdle at Town Moor last time out, staying on well to see off the challenge of evens-favourite, Blaklion.
In all honesty he looked beaten in that contest but given his guts and determination over his first attempt at 3m we’re plumping for this maverick entrant to fill a place.
A tricky race to unpick but as always we’ll give it a go and we think we’ve found a lively outsider.
5lb claimer Patrick Cowley will be onboard Forthefunofit. The amateur rider boasts a 33 per cent strike this season – four wins from 12 outings – and has a decent horse to steer from the Jonjo O’Neill yard.
The six-year-old son of Flemensfirth saw off decent handicapper Party Rock on his last outing at Huntingdon and represents good each-way value here.
Expect a huge gamble for Ned Buntline as AP McCoy bids to bow out of his final Cheltenham Festival with a bang.
But as we’re not bothered by sentiment we’ve naturally looked elsewhere with a Presbury Park stalwart given the nod.
This will be the third Festival appearance for 2013 County Hurdle winner Ted Veale.
He didn’t beat much when landing a Grade 3 contest at Roscommon back in September but since then he’s been second to Clarcam in the Grade 1 Racing Post Novice Chase and has shown decent enough form over fences to suggest he can challenge.
