Henry and Cahill lead the charge in our Top 5 best MLS goals

Published:

Back and better than ever, Major League Soccer returns this weekend with Sky Sports the new home of all things soccer Stateside.

The season ahead is already shaping up to be the best one yet with two brand new franchises in the form of Orlando City and the Manchester City-backed New York City.

Oh, and there’s also the small matter of both Kaka and Steven Gerrard joining the league.

Ahead of Sunday’s season-opening curtain-raisers, we’ve decided to trawl through the archives to find five of the most memorable goals ever scored in the MLS.

5. Robbie Keane – LA Galaxy

The Republic of Ireland’s all-time top-scorer has proven prolific in the US, scoring 53 goals in 84 games for the Galaxy. This half-volley against Toronto was a particular highlight, though you wouldn’t know it from his celebration.

4. Thierry Henry – New York Red Bulls

Arsenal’s favourite Frenchman (sorry Arsene) played in the States for the final years of his career and provided plenty of highlights along the way with this strike against Sporting Kansas City something of a textbook Henry finish.

3. Obafemi Martins – Montreal Impact

Best remembered for his time at Newcastle  – as well as scoring a fortunate winner for Birmingham in a League Cup final – Martins has been enjoying himself in the MLS for some time and won the 2014 Goal of the Year for this great chip.

2. Tim Cahill – New York Red Bulls

Australia’s best export has scored goals wherever he has gone but few compare to this one against Houston Dynamo – the fastest in MLS history. The defence may have parted like the Red Sea but Cahill’s finish remains a thing of beauty.

1. Bradley Wright-Phillips – New York Red Bulls

Son of Arsenal legend Ian Wright, Bradley Wright-Phillips was playing in the lower reaches of the English football league before landing his MLS move.

Since then he has set a new record for the most goals scored in a single season and also netted this stunner for the MLS all-star team against Bayern Munich.
