Everton’s Europa League hero poised to bring Magpies down next

Once again Everton’s Europa League exploits provided welcome relief from their dreary Premier League campaign, but as they go back to the bread and butter against Newcastle, their record signing should be licking his lips.

Romelu Lukaku’s contribution to the Everton cause was vital once again in Europe as the £28m man stepped up to score a penalty in the 82nd minute to send his team to Dynamo Kiev with a 2-1 advantage for the second leg.

That goal was the Belgian bulldozer’s 16th since making his Goodison Park switch permanent last summer and places him on seven goals in the Europa League, only one behind RB Salzburg’s Alan.

In a season where Everton have toiled to reproduce the form which saw them worry the Champion League spots in the Premier League for much of last term, it begs the question of just what size hole Roberto Martinez’s team would be in had their top scorer got injured?

As it is, the Toffees will be 14th when the entertain 11th-place Newcastle on Sunday afternoon in a match they look a tad skinny at 4/5 to win, given they’ve finished all square at home in their last four league games.

However, in Lukaku they not only have a player who has scored six in his last six games, he’s also been gobbling up chances against the Magpies in recent times.

The former Chelsea striker has bagged four times in five league matches when facing the boys in black and white.

Naturally, this should lead to all sorts of bets on the boy such as the 9/2 about the first goal, the 5/4 for an anytime strike and the 9/4 Everton wincast featuring…..Lukaku.
