If Manchester City dispose of Manuel Pellegrini they must seek to bring another manager from La Liga to the Etihad, that is according to Ladbrokes News’ latest poll.
Among a septet of highly talented, some experienced and others up-and-coming, managers, it was going to be hard to stand out, but it appears Diego Simeone has done just that.
The Atletico Madrid man picked up a sizeable 52 per cent of votes, with Pep Guardiola and Patrick Viera back in third.
At 44 he may not be the most experienced of managers, but the Argentine has earned plenty of accolades in his time, particularly in the Spanish capital.
A Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, one La Liga title, a Copa Del Rey and a Champions League final show that the man knows how to manage a top class football team.
And if the Atletico Madrid hierarchy were open to their current gaffer making the switch to the Premier League, it could be a move that delights the Citizens boardroom.
Prior to Manuel Pellegrini getting the gig back in 2013, the last two managers to sit in the home dugout of the City of Manchester Stadium were no older than 45.
One thing is for sure if our poll is anything to go by, and that’s Ronald Koeman is better biding his time for the job in Barcelona’s hot-seat becomes available, with the Dutchman attract just four per cent of the vote.
The same fate was adorned to both Rafa Benitez and Carlo Ancelotti, the market leader friendless in this particular popularity contest.
There were respectable showings for the pair in second and third, Guardiola and Viera picking up 19 per cent and 11 per cent of the votes between them respectively.
It is questionable though whether the former would want to leave a Bayern Munich team in dominating form of late and join a City outfit with plenty of questions to answer.
Viera meanwhile is certainly doing a great job with the club’s reserve side, but whether the board would want to thrust him straight into the managerial limelight remains to be seen.
In summary, it looks as though the South American theme is set to continue at City, with an Argentine voted most suited to succeed the Chilean incumbent.
