Despite what some might say, the beauty of this cricket World Cup is its length.
As the one-month anniversary of the start of the competition approaches, each team still has two pool matches to play (Ireland and India have three) before the quarter finals can begin.
Rather than flail over the sheer lunacy of another 15 matches taking place before we even find out who will be in the knockout phase, the news.ladbrokes team have spotted the opportunity to find some betting value in the top run-scorer and wicket-taker markets.
With the bat, the tournament’s current top scorer comes from the UAE. Shaiman Anwar’s 270 runs from four games is so unexpected that Ladbrokes still haven’t priced him up to be at the top of the pile come the end of the competition.
Considering the UAE are likely to head out at the group stage, that’s perhaps understandable. However, there remain some lengthy prices available from selections that do have odds considering who they have left to face.
Brendon McCullum, for instance, is only 63 runs off top spot, but is 14/1 to end the tournament as the leading run maker.
He has Afghanistan and Bangladesh left to play before the knockout stage and could fling himself up towards the top of that list within 20-odd balls of ferocious hitting, then out of sight.
With the ball the same theory applies to Morne Morkel.
South Africa have Pakistan and the UAE as their remaining Pool B assignments and, in the absence of Dale Steyn’s form, Morkel has led the Proteas pace attack with nine wickets.
He is 10/1 to overhaul the four-scalp lead New Zealand’s Tim Southee holds over him to end the tournament as the top bowler.
