City lead the race to sign Liverpool contract rebel

Manchester City are leading the race to sign Liverpool contract rebel Raheem Sterling, according to the latest odds.

Ladbrokes has priced the Citizens up as the 3/1 favourites to pounce after the forward refused to sign a £180,000 per week deal on offer at Anfield.

Sterling, who is contracted to the Reds until 2017, has put potential suitors on red alert by saying he will not make a decision on his future until the end of the current campaign.

Jack Beresford of Ladbrokes said: “With Sterling refusing to discuss a new deal until the end of the season, punters are backing the Reds favourite to turn Sky Blue in the summer.”

City recently hit the headlines after it emerged that if the FA’s plans to increase the quota of home-grown players that Premier League clubs must have were moved forward the Etihad outfit would need to release no fewer six players.

This, and the fact that Sterling has been in fine form for club and country for the past season and a half, has seen the 20-year-old emerge as a priority signing for the Sky Blues.

City are not the only club interested in the attacker’s services, however, with Arsenal also rumoured to be preparing a substantial bid to prise him away from Merseyside.

Arsene Wenger’s men are priced at 5/1 to win the race but there are also admiring glances coming from Spain.

Real Madrid are known admirers of the diminutive forward and the La Liga giants are priced up at 6/1 alongside Chelsea.

Barcelona and PSG are next in the betting at 10/1, while Bayern Munich and Manchester United are believed to be focusing their attention elsewhere and as a result are individually priced at 14/1 to be Sterling’s next club.

After losing 2-1 to Manchester United last time out Liverpool are now five points adrift in the race to secure a Champions League berth and any failure to close that gap is likely to see Sterling further his career away from the Kop.
