Champions League: Shakhtar can engineer shock Bayern Munich exit

Published:

After successfully frustrating Bayern Munich into a goalless draw in their “home” tie in the Champions League round-of-16 clash, Shakthar Donetsk travel to Germany still with a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the quarter finals.

Ladbrokes make the Ukrainian outfit 5/1 chances to capitalise on the 0-0 draw they earned at Arena Lviv three weeks ago, but have a glimmer of hope of progressing at the Allianz.

The Miners have only lost twice on the road all season and went through the Champions League group stage unbeaten earlier in the campaign. They are also enjoying a seven-game run without defeat in all competitions.

Since returning from their winter break, Mircea Lucescu’s side have shown no signs of rust, winning one and drawing two of their three games and keeping two clean sheets.

Luckily, such defensive stability isn’t required as a score-draw will be enough to see Pep Guardiola’s men crash out of the tournament via the away goal rule. 31/10 on the double chance looks worth a small investment based on Shakhtar’s stubbornness on the road.

It must be stressed, though, that that hope is nothing more than a glimmer, as the Bavarian’s responded to their Champions League stalemate with four straight wins, 15 goals scored and just two conceded.

5/4 says that Bayern will prevail over their opponents from the Eastern bloc with a two goal handicap hanging round their necks which, given their recent prowess looks like a diamond to a magpie.

In the goal-scorers markets, Shakhtar’s Luiz Adriano is 5/1 to score anytime which is a long price considering he is the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals in six games.
