Bergkamp beats Rooney to be crowned king of Newcastle goals

When it comes to scoring goals against Newcastle United, no one does it quite like Dennis Bergkamp, according to the latest Ladbrokes News poll.

The Dutchman’s majestic finish against the Magpies in a Premier League encounter at St James’ Park back in March 2002 came out on top when readers were asked to choose their favourite ever goal against the Toon.

Bergkamp picked up 42 per cent of the vote, just ahead of Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney who scored a 34 per cent share for his thunderous volley against the Tynesiders.

Former Liverpool man Luis Suarez picked up 12 per cent for a memorable goal against Newcastle that served to highlight the Uruguayan’s world-class close control with Southampton’s Matthew Le Tissier just behind on 11 per cent.

There was little support for Leighton Baines, however, with the Everton and England full-back picking up just one per cent of the vote in what proved to be a two-way tussle for victory.

Rooney is due to face the Magpies in the Premier League this evening and will be hoping to add another memorable strike to his showreel and boost United’s top four prospects.

The England captain is among the favourites to find the net on the night, having scored twice last time out for the Red Devils against Sunderland.
