A Wigan man through and through Wane was born in the town and came through the ranks at Wigan St Patricks before signing for Wigan in 1982. He made 149 appearances over the subsequent eight years winning the Lancashire Cup and will count a try in the 1986 John Player Special Trophy final win over Hull KR among his proudest playing moments.
Other highlights include a 1987 win in the World Club Challenge and a 1988 Challenge Cup final win over Halifax
Wane started his coaching career looking after Wigan’s under-18s and held various positions before landing the top job in 2011 and guiding the warriors to a historic double two years later.
Star Man: Liam Farrell
With the likes of Josh Charnley, Joe Burgess, Matty Bowen and the integral Sean O’Loughlin as teammates it may be easy to overlook Farrell but the 24-year-old’s input was huge in Wigan’s run to last year’s Grand Final.
The Second Row chipped in with 12 tries and four assists and made 579 tackles for his side – 99 more than any of his team-mates.
