Super Bowl XLIX: 5 reasons to love America’s best export
This Sunday from 11:30pm until the wee early hours of Monday the world will come to standstill, converging on television screens across the planet to watch the 49th edition of the Super Bowl and the culmination of another season centred on America’s favourite sport – and we can’t wait.
Whether you love American football or not is irrelevant – the Super Bowl is an event like no other and everyone should watch at least one of these magnificent matches within their lifetime, not simply because of the sporting drama that unfolds, but because of all the added extras.
Here are just five reasons to love NFL Super Bowl XLIX.
1. The Big Adverts
We Brits may never get an opportunity to see these adverts play out in real-time but with companies paying top dollar for a spot during the Super Bowl the result has been some pretty memorable clips that are all currently available to enjoy on YouTube.
Budweiser’s latest has already been released (see above) and appears heavily influenced by the John Lewis Christmas ads that do the rounds here.
2. Late Night Sport
With the Super Bowl starting late into the night on Sunday it’s advisable to take the following day off work, rather than risk going in bleary-eyed and with memories of last-gasp touchdowns and the raucous celebrations that followed still fresh in the mind.
In this sense there is something fantastic about staying up late on a Sunday night to watch sport and party, safe in the knowledge that when that alarm rings at 6am for work the next day, you can hit the snooze button with a hammer-like fist and sleep right on through.
3. The Half-time show
NFL fans may possess plenty of patience during the actual in-game action, but when it comes to the customary half-time break they demand entertainment and that usually means something a little more than watching their team’s mascot doing the Running Man dance for half-an-hour.
When it comes to the Super Bowl they tend to pull out all the stops, with a star-studded musical collaboration. Last year it was Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers while Katy Perry is set to perform this year, with one US bookmaker even taking bets on whether she reveals cleavage.
Just don’t mention anything about wardrobe malfunctions…
4. American food
Whether you’re hosting your own Super Bowl party or due to attend one of the many, many shindigs scheduled at pubs and bars up and down the country, alongside the obvious beverage bonuses, there is, of course, the prospect of a veritable plateau of fatty and fantastic US foods to enjoy.
From honey-glazed hot wings and brilliantly barbecued ribs, chilli dogs, gourmet brioche bun burgers and fries, take your pick, whether carnivore or vegetarian and get ready to sit back, loosen those belts and enjoy a sports festival for the eyes as well as the tastebuds.
5. The Betting (Of course)
Whether it’s point spread and total points, first and anytime touchdown scorers , MVP or even alternative point spreads we’ve got the markets and the odds you need to make this the most enjoyable Super Bowl to date.
So load up on the drinks, the food and the fun and get ready for a night/morning – and game – to remember!
