QPR on red alert as former Everton hero hits the market

Tim Cahill has left MLS side New York Red Bulls by mutual consent, and the former Everton schemer is expected to sign for a new club before the transfer window closes.
Cahill is Australia’s all-time leading scorer at international level and played a huge part in the Socceroos’ recent Asian Cup triumph, scoring both goals in the 2-0 win over China in the quarter-final.
The 35-year-old is thought to have offers on the table from China, UAE and Qatar, but QPR has also been mentioned as a potential deadline-day destination for a player who turned out 226 times in the Premier League for the Toffees between 2004-12, scoring 56 times.
Cahill managed over an hour on the pitch in the Asian Cup final victory over South Korea in Sydney, which the hosts won 2-1 after extra time, and scored one of the goals of last summer’s World Cup against the Netherlands during the group stage.
QPR have still not managed to claim a point on the road since promotion back to the top flight last May, and striker Charlie Austin has bagged 13 of their 24 league goals this term. Midfielder Leroy Fer is next best with three.
With only enigmatic Argentine forward Mauro Zarate recruited so far this January, and Jordon Mutch sold to Crystal Palace, it’s not hard to imagine Harry Redknapp going for Cahill as the clock ticks down on the window.
