Price Boost: Liverpool skipper the man in the scoring hotseat

If Liverpool want to give Steven Gerrard the perfect send off for his Liverpool career by winning the FA Cup on his birthday, then they better start playing their captain marvel in the tournament before they no longer have the chance.

The departing skipper is the only player in Liverpool’s number to score a goal in the tournament this season, bagging a brace in the third-round tie at AFC Wimbledon before watching from the stands as his teammates were held to a stalemate in a home tie against Championship side Bolton.

It’s likely then that Brendan Rodgers recalls the Reds’ hero to the starting lineup for the trip to the Macron Stadium for the replay, even though the midfielder is complaining of a slight tightness in his hamstring.

Having been spared from the matchday squad against West Ham last time out though, it seems likely that Gerrard is recalled to the starting XI for the clash against Neil Lennon’s side, which will be music to the ears of the player’s supporters in the first goalscorer market.

What would normally be a 7/1 shot for the former England man to bag first is now a 9/1 chance thanks to Ladbrokes’ decision to boost their odds on the outcome, which is a brave move considering the one-club man’s knack for breaking the deadlock this season.

The LA Galaxy-destined midfielder has opened the game’s account in each of his last two goal-scoring appearances, and has managed the feat three times in total this term.

With penalty and free-kick duties also assigned to the skipper, the chance of him bagging at an inflated price looks extremely tempting.
