Newcastle United battling AC Milan for French youth prospect

Newcastle could face stiff competition for the signing of Morgan Sanson this summer, with AC Milan and West Ham both thought to be keen on the Montpellier midfielder.

Talksport have reported that the Magpies may make an approach for the 20-year-old this summer with both the Hammers and Rossoneri also linked with a move at the end of the current campaign.

However quotes attributed to the player by Calcio Mercato seem to suggest the Toon may have a chance of landing the player ahead of their Italian rivals with Sanson expressing an interest in moving to the Premier League.

“From a young [age], England has always fascinated me,” he reportedly said. “I want to go there, but we’ll see in the future.”

Milan are in the midst of a troubled season in Serie A with the Diavolo currently ninth in the table and six points off a Europa League place.

Manager Filippo Inzaghi, meanwhile, is under increasing pressure following a poor run of results.

Fail to qualify for any form of continental competition next term and Sanson could decide to instead switch to the Premier League.

Newcastle have another distinct advantage over West Ham too with seven French players currently on the books at St James’ Park.

This Gallic presence could help Sanson make a smooth adjustment to life in England while former teammate Remy Cabella is also likely to be doing his best to convince the midfielder to join him in the north east.

A France under-21 international with eight caps and one goal to his name, Sanson started his career at Le Mans before moving to Montpellier two years ago and has scored four goals in 59 Ligue 1 appearances for La Paillade.

The signing of Sanson could come as part of a major overhaul of the Newcastle United squad, with John Carver increasingly unlikely to be managing the team from next season.

Appointed to the role until the end of the season, the Toon coach has so far overseen just one Premier League win with Newcastle thoroughly outplayed in a 5-0 defeat by Manchester City last Saturday.

Carver will be hoping for an immediate response from his Newcastle players this weekend though with the Toon in action against Aston Villa.
