Six Nations: Sorry Scotland, but a Wales backlash seems certain

| 14.02.2015

Two teams in markedly different ‘moments’ face off at Murrayfield when upbeat Scotland host embarrassed Wales during the second week of Six Nations 2015 action.

There’ll be plenty of takers on the hosts to win at 11/8. As much as Vern Cotter’s side should be applauded after putting it up to France away, we won’t be one of them.

Here are our three best bets for the fixture.

Wales (-9) to beat Scotland @ 2/1

They may have been beaten up at home to England, but it’s now or never for Gatland and co against a side they’ve had the measure of in recent years.

Scotland haven’t beaten Wales since 2007, and were walloped 51-3 in Cardiff last term by the Dragons, who were at the back end of a far from convincing campaign.

Cotter’s crowd were excellent at times against a lacklustre France side in Paris, with Six Nations debutant Finn Russell particularly encouraging at fly half in their 15-8 loss, but 48 points is a helluva lot to make up against a team playing for their international futures.

Rhys Webb to score the first try @ 10/1

Despite getting the result badly wrong at the Millennium Stadium, this website did manage to call the Ospreys number nine going over first at 12/1. It all looked so good at 10-0…

Fellow scrum-half Conor Murray franked that form, in a sense, by touching down first for Ireland in their 26-3 win over Italy in Rome, and Webb has now grabbed two openers in a row, as well as a try against the All Blacks in the autumn.

Total cards in the match: Two or more @ 3/1

There was a yellow card in each of the first-round fixtures last weekend, and Scotland and Wales obliged with one apiece courtesy of Johnnie Beattie and Alex Cuthbert.

With that in mind, 3/1 looks big on each side managing the same again.
