Manchester United will pass up the option to sign Radamel Falcao permanently from Monaco and have already identified his replacement.
That is according to reports that say Louis van Gaal has Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski in his sights.
The Polish international has scored 16 goals in 32 games since joining Munich from Borussia Dortmund but it is thought that all is not well behind the scenes at the Allianz Arena and that the 26-year-old is open to a move.
Falcao joined United in a shock transfer deadline day deal in the summer and was expected to prove that his injury worries are now behind him.
However, the Colombian has struggled to hold down a first team place at Old Trafford and has managed to score just four goals in 19 appearances, despite featuring in games against the likes of Cambridge, Yeovil and Preston.
It would cost United around £43m to make the former Atletico Madrid man’s loan deal a permanent one but it is understood Van Gaal believes he can find better value elsewhere – starting with the Bundesliga ace.
Meanwhile, Van Gaal’s attempt to beef up his midfield has seen Nigel de Jong’s name crop up once again.
The former Manchester City and current AC Milan midfielder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford since Van Gaal’s appointment was first announced but according to Italian website Calcio Mercato, the player is now in pre-contract negotiations with his former international boss.
United will attempt to bounce back from defeat to Swansea at the weekend when they welcome Sunderland to Old Trafford on Saturday.
The Red Devils may have fallen short at the Liberty Stadium but the betting suggests an instant return to wining in ways, with United priced as 4/11 favourites to send the Black Cats home empty handed.
