McIlroy’s Masters price must be snapped up before it shrivels

Published:

If Rory McIlroy is in the field at any golf tournament these days expect him to be at the top of the betting for it, even if that tournament is months away from taking place.

Whether he is in form or not, the qualities the 25-year-old has shown in winning 19 professional titles, four of them Majors, demand that the bookmakers respect his ability with suitably short prices.

Such success allows McIlroy to cross achievements off his career to-do list at a regular rate, but there remain some targets in his sights, such as the records currently held by Jack Nicklaus, that require further improvement if he’s to achieve them.

The good news for the Holywood native is that his game still looks to be on an upward trajectory. His recent win in the Dubai Desert Classic, his first triumph of 2015, was a lesson to his peers in flawless final-round golf.

A sensible and efficient 70 in the final round was as professional as it got for McIlroy, keeping his pursuers at arm’s length, proving that the Northern Irishman is approaching peak condition both with his swing and mentality.

With another four Major tournaments set out in front of him, McIlroy will surely pick the Masters above all others as the one he wants to win most desperately, banishing the demons of 2011 in the process.

The Ryder Cup star is 7/2 to triumph at Augusta come April, which is a price that must be leapt on should he continue his form from Dubai on for the coming months.

50/1 says that all four Major tournaments are claimed by McIlroy this year, which is a longer price than would be available if you were to back him separately, but is still not long enough to be off-putting as his game goes from strength to strength.
