Man Utd announce shock deadline day defender deal

Published:

It’s true! Manchester United have confirmed that they’ve taken Bolton Wanderers left-back Andy Kellett, who has recently returned from three months at Plymouth, on loan for the rest of the season.

Nobody seems to have seen the left-field move coming, with Sky Sports’ Jim White catching twitter by surprise when suggesting Kellett could be on the way to Old Trafford, while Reds defender Saidy Janko jogged off to Bolton for the rest of term.

To be fair, Louis van Gaal only has 19-year-old Luke Shaw and 21-year-old Reece James (who has spent some time at Rotherham recently) before having to resort to winger Ashley Young in the position.

The Red Devils defence has been a shambles this season, but Van Gaal is known to be targeting world-class centre-halves such as Marquinhos, Mats Hummels and Raphael Varane. There has been little talk of League Two full-backs.

A move for Varane was still rumoured to be a possibility in the early knockings of deadline day, but the long-held belief that Van Gaal and Old Trafford money man Ed Woodward would wait until summer to re-loosen the purse strings proved accurate.

But hey, they’ve picked up a 21-year-old left-back who bagged in Plymouth’s 3-2 win at Northampton, and at least poor old Anderson’s gone back to Brazil.
