Liverpool ‘magician’ in Premier League bargains of the century

Published:

On the same day as Liverpool face Bolton in their FA Cup fourth-round replay, the whole club has been given a lift with the news Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho has committed his long-term future to the club.

The 22-year-old, who is a 2/1 chance to score against the Trotters, was clearly in good spirits after penning the extension which keeps him at Anfield until 2020.

“I’m really happy. It’s a dream come true playing for this great club and being part of this squad,” he told liverpoolfc.com.

That feeling is sure to be mutual for Coutinho’s teammates who refer to the number 10 as the ‘little magician’ for his outstanding dribbling ability and vision, which was particularly evident with two assists against West Ham on his last appearance.

Since Brendan Rodgers plucked the midfielder from obscurity at Inter for a fee shy of £10m in January 2013, Coutinho has consistently shone for Liverpool and was integral to their march to second last season.

Below is a shortlist of five other sub £10m buys who have lit up the Premier League since the turn of the century. Please tell us if we’ve grossly overlooked anyone or hit the nail on the head…
