Kamara: Villa need a man who can take off the shackles

| 13.02.2015

There was almost an air of inevitability about Paul Lambert’s sacking by Aston Villa following the 2-0 loss to Hull that sent the Claret and Blues tumbling into the relegation zone.

But who should they turn to now in their battle to avoid the drop?

According to one former manager the West Midlands club need to appoint a new boss who’s not afraid to let the Premier League strugglers express themselves on the pitch.

Chris Kamara told Ladbrokes News: “Whoever gets the Villa job now needs to let the shackles off. Paul was so concerned about not losing rather than winning which has been the problem.

“That wasn’t the case when he managed Norwich. But the fear factor crept into his team. You thought they’d snap out of it but it never happened and he’s ended up paying the price for that.”

Villa’s plight this term has been well documented with a return of just 12 goals in 25 Premier League games a particularly haunting statistic.

However, while their situation looks bleak at present, Kammy believes a new face will have a decent squad to work with.

“Villa have got some very good players” he added.

“The goalkeeper’s good, Ron Vlaar’s up there with the best centre-backs in the league and then you have the likes of Fabian Delph who’s a top player on his day. There’s quality there.

“Someone will come in and it’ll be like a breath of fresh air. Paul’s not a bad manager but he got caught up in a situation where he felt the need to be overly cautious.”

Ladbrokes currently have Tim Sherwood as the 1/3 favourite to succeed Lambert with Glenn Hoddle (3/1) and Jurgen Klinsmann (16/1) two other market principals.

Kammy continued: “The problem for clubs sacking their managers at the moment is who do they bring in?”

“Clubs at the top of the Championship aren’t going to want to let their men go. And that magic roundabout of managers who were just waiting to get a job – Harry Redknapp, Jim Smith, Dave Bassett – they’ve all got old now!

“The cupboard is bare and clubs are now having to look overseas.”

“Maybe the answer is to promote from within like QPR have done with Chris Ramsey. There’s no magic wand when it comes to picking a new man to be in charge. There simply aren’t the names available.”

Aston Villa face Leicester in the FA Cup fifth round this weekend with Scott Marshall taking charge of the 13/10 favourites.
