The Honda Classic: 3 stars worth a wager outside of McIlroy

Published:

Like any tournament Rory McIlroy turns up for, golf’s headline act is given the shortest odds by some distance to win The Honda Classic, as the PGA Tour switches coasts from Pebble Beach, California to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

McIlory claimed victory at Palm Beach in 2012, while losing out in a playoff at the PGA National course last year, so this is a layout the Ulsterman is well versed in taming.

Add into the mix a solo second in Abu Dhabi before winning in Dubai on his last appearance and compressed odds of 3/1 are understandable, but we’ll stick our necks a fraction higher above the parapet with three other choices.

Keegan Bradley @ 25/1

The American Ryder Cup player features prominently in the PGA Tour website’s power rankings and for good reason too.

If it wasn’t for handicapping himself with an opening round 73 on his last start, Bradley may well have finished even higher than T4 at the Northern Trust Open, while he’s finished no worse than 12th in his last three Honda Classics.

Lee Westwood @ 33/1

It’s five cuts from five at The Honda for Westwood, where he’s hit top-10 heights on three separate occasions.

Boasting seasonal finishes of Win-T9-T5 since December, Westwood is striking the ball so cleanly it would be a genuine surprise if the Englishman weren’t in the mix come Sunday.

Sang-Moon Bae @ 50/1

At these delicious odds and with Ladbrokes paying out on the first five places at a quarter of the odds each way, South Korea’s rising star is worth more than a cursory glance.

Although Moon Bae is 1/2 at this event with a high finish of 47th, those results came before the light switched on in glaring fashion this season, where he kicked things off with a maiden PGA Tour victory at the Frys.com Open.

Three other top-10s have arrived since, including a tie for eighth at the Northern Trust before this which has propelled the Korean to fourth in the FedExCup standings.
