Crystal Palace linked to bid for ‘Championship Bergkamp’

One of the stars of Middlesbrough’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup, Lee Tomlin could be set for a move up to the Premier League with Crystal Palace.

The 26-year-old was close to scoring what would have been the pick of the goals in the fourth round of the cup, after a drag-back turn and shot that was reminiscent of Dennis Bergkamp’s famous finish against Newcastle United over a decade ago.

But despite failing to find the net on that occasion, it is thought that the former Peterborough winger has done enough to convince Palace of his quality, with the Eagles lining up a deal that could see midfielder Barry Bannan move in the opposite direction.

Tomlin has been an integral part of Boro’s fine start to the current campaign, with the Teesiders third in the Championship and just three points off leaders Bournemouth.

Both Burnley and West Brom are thought to have run the rule over the tricky attacker, but the opportunity to play in London under Alan Pardew a Palace side that looks increasingly unlikely to suffer relegation this term could prove to be decisive factors in any decision.

Tomlin has featured 28 times for Boro this season, weighing in with seven goals for the Teesiders so far this term.

Previous with Rushden & Diamonds, a move to Palace would see the 26-year-old enter the record books as one of a select number of players to have appeared in the Conference, League Two, League One, the Championship and, potentially, the Premier League.
