Cricket World Cup Day 3: West Indies and Ireland stars boosted

Published:

Ireland and West Indies kick off their World Cup campaigns against each other in Pool B and each side’s premier batsmen have been boosted by Ladbrokes to top score for their respective countries at the tournamnent.

You have to be quick to pick this offer up though, as it only runs from 9-9:30 pm Sunday.

Chris Gayle was 2/1, now 4/1 to be West Indies top runscorer

One of the superstars of T20 cricket, at 35 Gayle is also the West Indies leading man with the blade in ODIs as the opener begins his fourth World Cup.

No Windies player can match Gayle’s tally of 21 ODI centuries, while his 36.85 average over the middle-distance format is actually marginally higher than his T20 figures.

Although by his illustrious standards the explosive left-hander has been a little light on runs in recent warm-up ODIs, the all-rounder’s ability to make big totals, especially against the Associate nations, has never been in doubt.

Gayle’s runs will be key to West Indies hopes of qualification.

Ed Joyce was 10/3, now 5/1 to be Ireland’s top runscorer

Joyce was the main man for Sussex in the County Championship last season with bat in hand, racking up seven first-class centuries at a staggering average of 66.57.

Ireland will look to the left-hander to form the bedrock of their innings at this tournament as a result and hope he can replicate the ODI century he made in green against Pakistan in 2013.

A former England player at this level, Joyce is a calming influence on the side with tons of experience and an ODI average just shy of 45 since the beginning of 2012.
