Having flung himself headlong into the England reckoning with his match-winning performance against Arsenal, predictable chatter about Harry Kane catching the eye of Europe’s bigger clubs has quickly followed Sunday morning’s headlines.
Spurs’ boy wonder, who has 22 goals in all competitions during a breakout season for the Lilywhites, had his loyalty to the north London club questioned in the weeks leading up to the Gunners clash, as pictures of the striker wearing Arsenal shirts as a youngster emerged.
Kane brushed the images aside, declaring he has always been a Tottenham fan, but the England U21 international’s dedication to being a one-club man could wane should he learn of Real Madrid’s interest.
Spurs have a history of selling their most treasured assets to the Bernabeu giants, having flogged both Luka Modric and Gareth Bale to Los Blancos for mega bucks in the recent past, and it has been reported by the London Evening Standard that scouts from the La Liga club have earmarked the Walthamstow native as their next purchase.
According to the paper, Real scouts have watched Kane play three times over the course of the season and will undoubtedly be impressed with the abilities he has shown.
A five-year contract, signed on transfer deadline day, was thought to have shooed away any potential suitors to Kane’s signature, but with Spurs’ history selling to Madrid and Daniel Levy’s love of a deal, nothing is certain.
Admittedly it seems unlikely that Kane will be leaving White Hart Lane in the next two seasons, but if the summer of 2016 arrives and the current 7/2 Champions League hopefuls haven’t realised those ambitions, the local hero may well wish to test himself abroad.
