Basel v Porto: Swiss side a superb shout on the double chance

Published:

If Basel are to secure their first ever trip to the Champions League’s quarter finals without needing penalties, then they’ll have to end Porto’s unbeaten run in the competition at some point over the course of the two legs.

Not only do the Swiss face a side yet to suffer defeat in Europe, but Portuguese opposition have tended to cause Basel great trouble, beating them in all of their previous four Champions League meetings.

That’s likely what makes Porto the 11/8 favourites for the round-of-16 first leg, with the draw 11/5 and the hosts 23/10, although none of those selections make our roundup of three best bets for the night:

Both teams to score: No @ 4/5

There has only been two matches in the last seven at St. Jakob-Park where both teams have found the back of the net. All three of Basel’s Champions League group games saw only one team score.

Porto have been equally obliging to followers of this bet, having seen all of their last four (and five of the last six) land.

Basel double chance @ 4/7

The Swiss side’s appearance at this stage of the competition can largely be put down to their home form, where they have conceded just three goals in their last seven outings and won seven of their previous 11.

Their chances are aided by the fact that Porto have only won one of their last 13 away games in the knockout stage, coming all the way back in the 2003/04 campaign.

Jackson Martinez to score at anytime @ 8/5

The sought-after Colombian striker has notched four times in three Champions League away games this season, coming close by hitting the woodwork on another three occasions, which is more than any other player.
