AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am: Mahan ready to become the Daddy

The PGA Tour opens its gates to a 156-strong field of professionals flanked by their amateur colleagues for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am, disputed over three different courses and concluding on the iconic Pebble Peach links on Sunday.
One of the more unique beasts on the schedule, since 2010 the AT&T has utilised the Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s courses as the other hosting venues.
All players play a round on each of the three courses before a 54-hole cut, with the low 60 left taking to the Pebble Beach links for a second run.
Considering the nuances of such a format, this tournament is certainly one where previous showings carry a greater significance than actual form coming into the event.
On that note, defending champion Jimmy Walker is definitely the pick over fellow 8/1 shot Jason Day at the front of the betting on Ladbrokes.
Despite the new Australian number one’s win at the Farmers before this, Day can’t touch FedExCup leader on the California coast in recent seasons, where Walker booted in three top-10s prior to his win.
However, lurking a little further down the pack is 2011 runner-up Hunter Mahan, who catches the eye at 25/1.
Returning to the Tour after a month’s paternity leave, Mahan’s tee-to-green accuracy has seen him handle the conditions of all three courses admirably over the last four years, finishing no worse than 16th.
The Ryder Cup star ranks third in the PGA Tour’s greens-in-regulation stats – an essential path to success at links courses – while he is also 10th in ball striking.
Buoyed by the arrival of his second child, but no doubt eager to get back to the game, Mahan has the perfect chance of capping a memorable winter.
