Westwood to finally win a major among 5 big golfing hopes in 2015

With the PGA Tour just cranking into gear after its winter break and many of the European Tour’s big names yet to begin their races Dubai-wards, 2015 has a veritable feast of golf waiting ahead.
In feverish anticipation of the golfing year still yet to unroll, here at News.Ladbrokes we’ve set out five things we’d love to see unfold.
Rory McIlroy to complete the career Grand Slam
Having landed the Claret Jug last summer, the Masters remains the only missing piece of the career Grand Slam for McIlroy. 2014 belonged almost exclusively to the Ulsterman and the world number one deserves to exorcise his 2011 Augusta demons with a Green Jacket for his Nike-filled wardrobe. McIlroy is the 4/1 favourite to win the first Major of the year and 1/4 to win the Masters at any point in his career.
Lee Westwood to win a major
The Englishman continues to perform among the elite of world golf at Major championships with more top 10’s than Madonna. Very few players could match placing in the first three at all four flagship events during a fantastic career, though at 41 ‘Westy’ is in real danger of joining the Colin Montgomery oh-so-close-but-no-cigar club. Westwood is 14/1 to win a Major in 2015.
Jordan Spieth realising some potential with wins
The 2013 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year shot to prominence by sharing runner-up spot at last year’s Masters aged just 20, becoming the youngest American in history to finish in the top 10 at Augusta. Although the Ryder Cup player posted seven other top 10s during the season, he still only has one victory under his belt. Coming home 17th at the 2014 US Open represented a laudable effort, though he was way off in the other Majors and someone of Spieth’s exceptional talent should be lifting trophies in 2015. The American is 5/1 to capture a Major in the year ahead.
Tiger Woods returning to form
That Woods is still second in the betting for every Major of 2015 behind McIlroy – where he’s 12/1 for The Open Championship for instance – tells its own story. 2014 was a complete write off for the 14-time Major winner, overshadowed by injury and a bemusing struggle with his formerly flawless swing. However, the golfing legend has a new swing guru, claims to be injury-free and last time he was fully fit, Tiger stormed to five tournament victories in 2013.
Some light-hearted entertainment
Golf has the tendency to become a little serious at times, especially where the R&A is concerned. Thankfully though, the game has always had characters and brilliant moments of improvisation or comedy to cut through the austere atmosphere and long may that continue. More YouTube gold like this 2013 incidence featuring Sergio Garcia and a tree would be most welcome.
