Southampton looking to keep the good Vibe going at St Mary’s

Ronald Koeman is looking to add one more attacker to his squad in a bid to maintain Southampton’s bid for a top four finish.

The Dutchman can name loan signing Eljero Elia as his only new addition this month but that could soon change with a bid for in-form IFK Göteborg forward Lasse Vibe in the works.

Koeman is keen to lighten the load on top scorer Graziano Pelle and sees the 27-year-old Dane as an ideal addition.

Vibe is something of a late bloomer, having struggled to graduate into the first team at home town club AFG Aarhus earlier in his career.

His current form is a far cry from those days however, after being crowned Allsvenskan top scorer last year with a tally of 23 goals from just 26 games.

Vibe’s career total now stands at 81 goals from 193 games and Koeman will hope his transfer Midas touch sees the player bring his form with him to the Premier League should any deal materialise.

The St Mary’s club are rumoured to have around £6m left in the transfer kitty after their summer rebuilding programme and with transfermarkt.co.uk valuing the player at just £660,000 the south coast club have more than enough to tempt Goteborg into selling.

After seeing much of the team that excelled under Mauricio Pochettino sold off in the summer, Southampton have shocked plenty of people to sit third in the league in January.

Koeman’s side are now just 5/4 to remain in the Champions league places until the end of the season but the Dutchman will be all too aware that the bookies favour Manchester United and Arsenal – both priced at 4/11 – to edge his side out.

Should Vibe arrive and maintain his impressive scoring record, however, one of the bigger clubs could be forced to make way for Southampton.

And, if available for under £1m, this potential acquisition looks a risk worth taking for Koeman.
