Poyet outburst at Sunderland fans makes him value to be shown the door

Published:

In slumping to their third Premier League defeat in four games this weekend, some Sunderland fans were left questioning the ideas of boss Gustavo Poyet.

But the Uruguayan was in no mood to take criticism at his post-match press conference:

“I think they need to accept the reality. I think they should look at the team, and what has been going on for the last four or five years. I think they should be more patient”, the former Brighton boss said.

Although the man in charge feels he deserves more time, there could yet be plenty of value in the 9/1 that says he is the next Premier League manager out the door.

The early parts of the season saw Poyet’s philosophy of first and foremost not losing being implemented perfectly, with the Mackems tasting defeat just three times in their opening 13 matches.

However, it is the lack of wins that could yet drag the Black Cats in to a relegation scrap.

With just a trio of victories to their name, no Premier League side have won fewer games than Sunderland, with Blackpool the only other club in the Football League to triumph so infrequently.

And now they seem to be getting found out at the back.

The magic of Sergio Aguero saw Manchester City put four past them in December, while both the Citizens and Hull have put three past them since Christmas.

The club are now just 3/1 to be relegated at the end of the season, and looking at their record against the four sides below them will have even the most optimistic Stadium of Light resident worried.

Of the four matches they have played against Burnley, QPR, Hull and Leicester this season, Sunderland have picked up just two points and scored just the solitary goal.

Those are the matches they should be winning if they are to avoid trouble, meaning their ties against the Clarets and the Rs in the next month could make or break their season.

What is for sure is that if they continue to struggle for wins Poyet’s position in charge will only get weaker.

Continue to bite back at the fans, and he could well be the next Premier League boss picking up his P45.

All Odds and Markets are correct as of the date of publishing.
