Newcastle looking to Hamburg hero despite lack of manager

Newcastle United could be about to put their money where their mouth is in the January transfer market with the potential acquisition of Hamburg striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga.

The club came in for criticism from Match of the Day anchor Gary Lineker earlier this month, with the BBC pundit suggesting that those behind the scenes at St James’ Park are delaying the appointment of a new manager in a bid to avoid spending big this month.

Newcastle are in dire need of goalscoring reinforcements with Papiss Cisse still struggling to recover from recent injuries and Ayoze Perez still too young and inexperienced to carry the weight of the entire team operating as a lone striker.

Emmanuel Riviere has so far failed to impress for the Magpies while Facundo Ferreyra has yet to feature for the club in the Premier League this term.

And with the fast running out for the Toon to recruit a new striker, the Daily Mail is claiming that the club could return to former target Lasogga.

The 23-year-old previously caught the eye of Newcastle after starring for Hamburg during a season-long loan from Hertha Berlin last term.

Lasogga scored 13 goals in 20 outings for Die Rothosen over the course of the 2013-14 campaign but despite interest from elsewhere opted to sign a permanent deal with the Bundesliga strugglers.

But after a return of just two goals in 16 outings this season Newcastle could be set to test the German club’s resolve this month with a bid for the forward.

Valued at around the £10m mark, according to Transfermarkt, the Toon will hope to iron out a deal for the striker that could potentially see the striker move to the club with a view to signing permanently at the end of the season.

A lack of goals is also likely to see that previous valuation greatly reduced though Hamburg may yet be tempted to play hard-ball with the Magpies as time ticks on towards the end of the month.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are no closer to appointing a new manager with a report in The Guardian claiming that the club could yet wait until the summer to bring in their preferred target.

Previous 6/4 favourite Remi Garde has now moved out to 3/1 with John Carver the new front-runner with Ladbrokes at 7/4.
