Liverpool v Chelsea: Visiting ace gets monster first goal boost

Published:

Who do you want boosted out to top price for first goal when Chelsea head to Liverpool for the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final?

Diego Costa, do we hear you cry? Done!

From 8am on Tuesday, the Spanish-Brazilian hotshot will go from 7/2 to 11/2 to grab the opener at Anfield, and there’s plenty of evidence to suggest this quote is too big.

Costa may have only bagged one first goal since his 11th-minute deadlock breaker at home to West Brom at the end of November, but he was clearly raring to go in Chelsea’s 5-0 win at Swansea over the weekend, notching twice before half time.

Unfortunately for the 26-year-old’s first-goal backers on that occasion, teammate Oscar had already helped himself to one within sixty seconds, but the Canarinho regular’s 2014/15 strike rate pales in comparison to Costa’s, with seven to the La Seleccion forward’s 17.

All of the former Atletico Madrid bruiser’s Blues efforts so far have come in the Premier League, but that shouldn’t worry Capital One Cup backers, as Costa is yet to play a minute in the competition.

He’s likely to be involved now Jose Mourinho’s side have reached the last four though, and surely holds cherished memories of Anfield after bagging the winner in Chelsea’s 2-1 top-flight victory at the start of November.

Furthermore, the hosts don’t possess a truly outstanding candidate to bag the opener, with six of their past seven first goals scored by different players.

Brendan Rodgers’ men are 5/2 to beat Chelsea for the first time in six meetings, with the Blues winning three on the bounce against their next opponents since the Special One returned to west London.

They’re just above evens at 6/5 to extend that run to four matches, with the draw 12/5.
