Kamara: I’m surprised and excited about Defoe’s move to Sunderland
It was pretty much always the case that wantaway striker Jermain Defoe was heading back to the Premier League during this January transfer window.
The only question was: where would he go?
And with the 32-year-old finally returning to these shores discussion has turned to pondering Defoe’s role on Wearside.
The Black Cats have struggled in front of goal so far this season with only Aston Villa’s paltry 11-goal total lower than their 18-goal Premier League return.
But could that all be set to change following Defoe’s arrival?
We asked Ladbrokes ambassador Chris Kamara for his thoughts.
“Sunderland have only been playing one up front and if they’re going to change their style to accommodate Jermain Defoe then it’ll add another dimension to their play. Instead of defending all the time they’ll be attacking too. Defoe and Steven Fletcher could be an awesome partnership”, he said.
“They’re not a bad side but they don’t often get their noses in front in games. This could change now though with the addition of Jermain. “
The Wearsiders had to beat off competition for Defoe’s signature with the likes of struggling Leicester City also interested in securing his services.
However, there is one club in particular that Kammy is surprised to see didn’t show much of an interest.
“I’m a little surprised he’s gone to Wearside. I thought he’d go to QPR and join Harry Redknapp again having signed him a couple of times before”, Kammy added.
“It’ll be a change for Jermain. Everyone thought he was a London-based player but he’s gone off to Toronto and now he’s back and has decided to venture to the north-east. I wish him well.”
Defoe could line-up against former club Tottenham in his first game back in England with his new side 9/2 to triumph at White Hart Lane. Meanwhile, Spurs are 3/5 favourites and the draw is 3/1 with Ladbrokes.
Plus, the bookmaker is also offering a number of Defoe-related specials, including going 5/1 that he’ll be called up to the next England squad.
