Humana Challenge: Haas to scupper Reed’s tilt at a defence

Last week’s Sony Open was widely recognised as a low-scoring event, with Jimmy Walker defending his crown at a canter thanks to a winning 23-under par total. But it wasn’t just Walker who went low in Honolulu, as all of the first 25 golfers past the post shot -10 or better.
Such form will put those who found life easy at Waialae Country Club last week in a great position to better the feat when the PGA Tour moves on to La Quinta for the Humana Challenge.
Last year Patrick Reed went wire-to-wire to win with a truly astounding -28 total, while 17 of the field shot 20-under or better across the four rounds.
Reed is installed as the 12/1 favourite to retain his title, two weeks after coming out on top in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, and is certainly not the worst wager in the world considering his form.
Around these parts we like to plump for a little more value in our golfing bets, and the record of a certain Bill Haas, at 25/1, has us leaning towards the North Carolina native over one of golf’s brightest young stars.
The 32-year-old has made a quiet return to the Tour in 2015, registering a tie for 22nd and a T48 in his two starts this term, but can easily ensure his form graph spikes at a tournament he has excelled at during his career.
Champion in 2010, Haas also has a runners-up spot (via a playoff) to his name at the Humana and lies third in the all-time money list for the event.
Not only that, but the two-time President’s Cup winner has made 17 consecutive cuts and turned 10 of those into top-25 finishes.
As a side bet, take the 5/2 on Jerry Kelly landing in the top 20. He’s in great form having shot a career-best 62 on the way to T6 at the Sony and finished solo fifth at the OHL Classic prior to that.
The three-time PGA Tour winner was tied for 13th at this tournament last year too.
