Dutchman to give Man Utd edge in race with Spurs for PSV man

The stream of rumours linking Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal to members of his last Holland squad at the World Cup have been endless.

Now that PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay has been reported as a rumoured target of the Dutch Red Devils boss there can’t be many of that 23-man Oranje party that haven’t supposedly been pursued since Van Gaal took over.

That doesn’t make the chase of Depay, who became his country’s youngest ever World Cup scorer when netting against Australia during last summer’s tournament, any less viable though, as United reportedly battle it out with Spurs for the £15m-rated wide man.

Both clubs, who are respective 4/11 and 7/1 shots to finish in the top four this season, have scouted Depay but it’s Van Gaal who holds the advantage over Mauricio Pochettino in the battle to land the 20-year-old’s signature.

It was the Iron Tulip who put his trust in the Moordrecht native at the World Cup, handing Depay his international debut during the World Cup qualification campaign, then taking the youngster in his squad for the finals and showing enough trust in him to throw him on from the bench.

Despite Tottenham having more of an obvious need for a winger, with Aaron Lennon out of favour and Andros Townsend and Erik Lamela showing inconsistencies, the relationship between the Dutch pair still makes United favourites to land their man.

Van Gaal’s current 3-5-2 formation doesn’t immediately work in Depay’s favour, but the manager’s doubts in Adnan Januzaj could provide the PSV player to forge an Old Trafford career.

Januzaj was handed a rare start for United in the FA Cup tie with Cambridge, but was unimpressive as he unsuccessfully tried to shake the rust that has built up on his game while sat on the United bench.
