Australia v India: Last chance saloon for winless Indians

Published:

India have been in Australia playing cricket in one form or another since late November and have not won a single game, be they of international or warm-up status.

Now if they want to realistically extend their hopes of making the current Carlton Mid Tri-Series final, they must defeat Australia, who are unbeaten in all forms during the summer.

If they don’t win, complicated permutations involving bonus points and net run rate enter the equation, and as we highlight in our three best bets below, they’ll likely need to figure them out:

Australia to win @ 1/2

The hosts are mounting a serious run of form heading in to the World Cup.

Australia haven’t lost any game this summer and have grown more and more impressive as that run has rumbled on.

In 13 matches against their opponents at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the green and gold wearers have lost only once, all the way back in 2008.

Steve Smith to score over 33.5 runs @ 5/6

Smith is an unstoppable runscoring force at the moment.

He became the first Australian to score a century in both his Test and ODI debuts as skipper in his match-winning knock against England last time out and hasn’t failed to pass the line handed to him for his latest innings in this series.

Australia (-4.5) to have the highest opening partnership @ 5/6

In Aaron Finch and David Warner the Australians have two men who look to attack the bowling from ball one.

There is every chance that there aggression could lead to an early demise, yet they look far more solid than the Indians’ offering so far.

Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane’s relative caution in comparison has seen the former fall early in each match of the series so far.
