Arsenal leading the chase for Sporting Lisbon star in January

Arsenal could be set to raise more than a few eyebrows this month with the signing of much-coveted Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to the latest odds from Ladbrokes.
The north London club have emerged as the favourites to sign the £25m-rated Portugal international, who could yet spark a bidding war after declaring his intentions to move to the Premier League in the near future.
Speaking to Portuguese news provider Record, Carvalho said: “My dream is to play in England. I know some clubs are interested but my agent Jorge is looking after it and I am relaxed.”
Ladbrokes have priced Arsenal as the 6/4 favourites to land the player this January with Manchester United back at 4/1 with the bookmaker.
Liverpool are priced at 5/1 to land the Portuguese star while Jose Mourinho looks increasingly unlikely to launch a bid for the player with Chelsea out at 8/1.
The real story remains Arsenal’s seeming willingness to spend big this month, something that goes against the ethos instilled at the club in previous seasons.
A spokesperson from Ladbrokes said: “The betting suggests Arsene Wenger may break the habit of a lifetime by bringing a world-class star to the Emirates in January, rather than a stop-gap like Kim Kallstrom.”
Serie A giants Juventus round-off the betting with the Bianconeri back at 12/1 to land Carvalho in the wake of his recent comments.
However with Juve likely to offer a bumper contract along with the opportunity to play alongside midfield stars like Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal, a change of heart could yet be on the cards for one of European football’s hottest properties.
