AFCON: Win for hosts Equatorial Guinea is one-half of day one double

Published:

It’s the opening day of the 2015 African Cup of Nations and what better way to keep up with the action than a little wager.

Luckily for Ladbrokes customers who may be a little unfamiliar with some countries participating at the tournament, we’ve opened the form books and leafed through the ACoN annals to provide a double for day one.

If successful, this little multiple pays out at 5/1:

Equatorial Guinea to beat Congo @ 13/10

Although hosts Equatorial Guinea will be a little underprepared due to the late notice of their staging duties back in November, they are a nation well-versed in exceeding expectations at the tournament.

Three years ago when co-hosting again Equatorial Guinea surprised everyone by reaching the quarter finals and the Group A side also have more history on their side.

No hosting country has lost their opening ACoN game of the finals since 1998, while opponents Congo are currently on a 12-match winless streak of Nations Cup matche.

Burkina Faso to draw with Gabon @ 15/8

The fact these teams share joint-favourite status for the Group A crown shows that there isn’t too much to choose between them.

Burkina Faso were the real deal in 2013, as they went on to reach a final and a strong spine of that team remain to contest the next edition.

Gabon are no mugs though as they proved by beating Burkina Faso and drawing against them in qualifying, while they’ve only one of their last eight Nations Cup matches, winning four of those.
