AFCON: Sunderland old boy to score and Algeria boost in 3 best bets

Published:

We’re at the business end of the group stage in the Africa Cup of Nations and after one too many 1-1 draws it honestly cannot come quick enough with the so-called ‘Group of Death’ throwing up two fixtures that will prove lethal to a pair of pre-tournament prospects here.

Avram Grant’s underwhelming Ghana face South Africa while the Desert Foxes of Algeria are also in danger of an early exit unless they can overcome Senegal.

With both games played simultaneously, we’ve picked out three bets to keep you entertained as the action unfolds on ITV4 and Eurosport – read on for all the details.

Algeria to win and BTTS Was 11/2 Now 13/2

A last-gasp Ghana goal means Algeria really need to win this one to progress but after seeing off South Africa with a 3-1 win in their first game, the Desert Foxes will back themselves against a Senegal side held by the Bafana-Bafana last time out.

And with neither side managing to pick up a clean sheet so far, we fancy both teams to get on the scoresheet, with Algeria coming out on top – as they did with a 3-2 victory the last time these two nations met.

Ghana v South Africa 0-0 at half-time @ 11/8

A dull prediction it may be, but it could really pay to back a goalless first half here, with both teams likely to be a tad nervous about making a potential tournament-ending mistake.

Three of the four games involving these two teams at the finals have been 0-0 at half-time and with nine of the first 18 games played at this tournament goalless at half-time this could be one way to enjoy an opening 45 minute borefest in style.

Asamoah Gyan to score first @ 11/2

Cometh the hour, cometh the Gyan and boy did Ghana need him with the 29-year-old stepping up last time out against Algeria, doing what he does best with a last-gasp winner to keep the Black Stars in the hunt for qualification.

Still struggling with a mild bout of malaria – if there is such a thing –the Al-Ain hit-man will be expected to lead the line with a goal here and after coming out of the World Cup with his reputation intact following two fine goals, he looks the best bet to score again here.
