Sunderland turn their attention to Hull’s benched captain Davies

He may currently hold the Hull City captain’s armband, but it appears Curtis Davies time at the KC Stadium may be coming to an end if reports are to be believed, with Sunderland leading the pursuit.
The ex-Aston Villa man has been left on the bench in recent games, his appearance at the FA Cup Third Round Draw the most screen time he’s had in Hull this month.
And with a fee of between £6-8m rumoured to be what it would take to force Hull’s hand, the Black Cats are ready to pounce, ahead of the likes of Leicester and neighbours Newcastle.
Davies himself has spoken out at how he wants to be playing in light of his recent benching:
“It’s obviously frustrating. Every player wants to play football, especially when you’re the captain of the football club. I’m hoping I can prove that to the manager again and get back in the side very soon”.
While it is clear the former England under-21 international is in no hurry to force his way out of the club, getting plenty of game time is high on his agenda.
Having been tipped up for a call up to the Three Lions’ senior side in the summer it has been a bit of a fall from grace for the Tigers’ Player of the Season last year.
Steve Bruce’s men are now nine games without a win and find themselves in the relegation zone, and have showed no signs recently that they are on the way up.
Potential suitors Sunderland do have a steady centre back pairing in Wes Brown and John O’Shea, but with that pair aged 35 and 33 respectively, Davies is a relative spring chicken.
A trip further north might not be a glamour move as such, but it could be better in the long term for the 29-year-old.
