Southampton v Chelsea: We’re banking on goals, goals and more goals

Published:

Southampton managed to bring there losing run to a halt with a victory against Everton last week, and followed that up with a win against Crystal Palace on Boxing Day, but they could be caught with a post-Christmas hangover when league leaders Chelsea visit St Mary’s.

One piece of solace the Saints can take into this is Chelsea’s (comparatively) inconsistent away record this season.

The Blues have only won two of their last five games away from Stamford Bridge, but nevertheless come into this tie as 4/5 favourites.

For those fancying a home win, it’s 7/2, while the price on the sides sharing the points is 11/4.

But with little value obvious in the WDW market, we’ve picked out a trio of sure-fire bets.

Over 3.5 goals @ 12/5

One thing is certain when you look at recent meetings between these two; the fans get their money’s worth.

The last eight encounters have seen three or more goals, which could mean an Over 2.5 goals tip is put up, but we are going one better.

Of those eight, five saw at least a quartet of strikes finding the back of the net, so with the stats to back it up, we are going for another goal-fest.

John Terry to score anytime @ 5/1

Chelsea’s influential captain was a bit slow off the mark this season, only netting his first goal last week, and promptly followed that up with the opener against West Ham on Boxing Day.

With 19 goals in the last three seasons in all competitions to his name, he certainly pops up with his fair share.

What’s more, he’s bagged in two of the last three meetings between these two, so clearly has a penchant for upsetting Saints fans.

Southampton to score the last goal @ 33/20

While we fancy plenty of goals, it is the underdogs who are likely to round off the scoring, whether as a mere consolation or something much more significant.

When looking at the goals Chelsea have conceded on their travels this season, it is obvious they are going to sleep late on in games.

Of the 10 times they’ve conceded on the road, five goals have come in the final 15 minutes of the match.
