Real Madrid striker wanted for season-repair job at Liverpool

Liverpool and links with strikers are a daily occurrence, but the latest rumour off the press implies the Reds are ready to get serious over one of their targets.

Ever since it became clear Luis Suarez was to be shipped to Barcelona in the summer, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been mooted as a possible replacement for the World Cup villain.

However the plausibility of an earmarked £20m move for the freshly-crowned Champions League winner always seemed questionable, until now.

One news source reports Liverpool are preparing a monstrous £50m bid to test Real’s resolve when the January transfer window commences.

Having seen the fountain of goals from last season run dry thanks to Suarez’s exit and Daniel Sturridge’s crippling injury problems, capturing a player of Benzema’s calibre would be just the injection needed to help resuscitate a flat-lining campaign.

Although the Reds made the semi-final of the Capital One Cup, they are way out at 11/2 to grapple back a top-four spot from seven points off the pace in the Premier League.

Also dumped of the Champions League in the initial phase, manager Brendan Rodgers has witnessed first-hand Benzema’s capabilities in front of goal.

The Frenchman scored three times against Liverpool over two legs, including a brace to silence the Anfield faithful.

This sharpness in front of the onion bag has been sorely lacking from the current cast of strikers on Liverpool’s payroll, not least ‘Super flop’ Mario Balotelli who hasn’t even registered a top-flight goal.

The Italian now faces a one-match ban for his social media misdemeanour and looks increasingly like being shipped out of Anfield in January.
