Three League One goal machines to rival Doyle for top-scorer crown

Published:

The runaway favourite to finish top-scorer in League One this season, Chesterfield’s Eoin Doyle is already being heavily-backed by Ladbrokes to be named the best marksmen in the division but there are plenty of value picks still in the mix.

A tally of 16 goals in 19 games so far this season has put him three ahead of his nearest contender, but the 26-year-old could yet be caught with Chesterfield still toiling in mid-table despite the Irishman’s efforts.

With that in mind, here are three promotion-chasing goal machines offering irresistible odds to be top scorer with Ladbrokes.

Jonathan Forte @ 11/2

The much-travelled former Southampton forward looks to have finally found a place to call home, having signed for Oldham in the summer on a permanent deal from the Saints.

A return of 13 goals in 17 league outings has gone some way to helping the Latics occupy the final play-off place and with Lee Johnson targeting promotion this season, Forte will know an impressive campaign could see him move up to the Championship, with or without Oldham.

Aaron Wilbraham @ 9/1

Some eyebrows were raised when the Robins recruited the 35-year-old, who previously failed to score a single league goal in 25 outings with Crystal Palace.

However the months and games that followed have gone some way to showcasing manager Steve Cotterill’s eye for a bargain, with Wilbraham in sensation form having scored 10 goals in League One already and plenty more in the cup.

With Bristol City on course for automatic promotion, more goals look likely to follow.

Joe Garner @ 20/1

The outsider to take the top-scorer crown in League One, the 26-year-old former Blackburn Rovers academy man remains just five strikes behind Doyle in the standings and is worthy of a closer look.

Once touted for big things at Nottingham Forest, Garner scored 19 goals in 32 league games for Preston last term and is on course to smash that total with 10 to his name already this term. With the Whites in the mix for a top two finish, he could prove instrumental and is a fantastic price.
