Kamara: Phil Taylor is still the man to watch at the World Darts

Published:

Legend of the sport Phil Taylor heads into this year’s PDC World Darts Championship as the 2/1 favourite to claim a 17th world title.

First up is an opening round tie against German minnow Jyhan Artut in what should be a routine victory for the Stoke arrowsmith, who is strongly fancied to advance deep into the competition.

There were doubters emerging following his shock defeat to Michael Smith in the previous edition but true to form ‘The Power’ has come roaring back to life following that set-back.

Taylor was at his imperious best in taking the Grand Slam title with an average of over 100 last month.

And, like many of us, that indefatigable spirit is something that Ladbrokes ambassador Chris Kamara has been admiring for a long time.

Kammy told Ladbrokes News: “Phil Taylor is a mate of mine and he’s a champion among champions. To win 16 world titles is incredible. I don’t know how he does it.

“Even in his more advancing years he’s still a top player. With age your eyesight fades and that’ll be the same for Phil but he’s not showing any signs of slowing down. “

There’s no doubt that Taylor remains a player to be feared, especially given the 54-year-old’s recent ruthless of results and tremendous record in the Alexandra Palace showpiece.

But what is it about ‘The Power’ that sets him apart from the majority of his peers?

“Phil’s biggest strength is his composure. He’s had set-backs like anyone else but the way he responds to those disappointments is different class”, Kammy added.

“You can see other players wilt under the pressure but he stays strong.

“Most sportsmen have a sell-by date but that’s not the case with Phil.”

The multiple world champion is an eye-watering 1/40 win his first round contest against 12/1 shot Artut with the 6/5 on Taylor winning the first set 3-0 offering far better value.
