Do it for Fleur! Bruno Mars only challenger to Christmas No.1 crown

Published:

After having the proverbial wool pulled over our eyes for much of the last two months, following the revelation that Ben Haenow had been the runaway favourite in the X Factor for some time, it’s up to Bruno Mars to salvage some dignity for beaten finalist Fleur East.

The Walthamstow singer looked gutted – as we all were at home – when it was announced that raspy-rocker Haenow had beaten her to the X Factor crown and the opportunity to follow Steve Brookstein, Leon Jackson and Matt Cardle into the depths of pop oblivion.

But while East is likely to live on as previous “losers” like One Direction, Olly Murs and Ella Henderson have, in the short-term it’s down to her old pal Bruno Mars to wreck Haenow’s Christmas number one dreams.

East performed Mars’ latest track “Uptown Funk” for the second time on the X Factor last weekend, and while it may not have been enough to see her crowned champion it has at least seen Mars emerge as a festive top spot contender.

Haenow remains the runaway favourite at 1/7 to hit number one with the already-forgettable “Something I Need” but Mars is closing in on the van-driving favourite and can currently be backed at 9/2.

It’s slim pickings from there with the Peace Collective charity single on at 20/1 to be named number one while Iron Maiden and Olly Murs featuring Demi Lovato are both the same price and both equally as unlikely to take top spot as25/1 shots Band Aid 30 – sorry Bob.

Elsewhere Ed Sheeran and One Direction are both priced at 33/1 along with The Pogues and LFO.

But with some 40 million votes cast in the X Factor final, Mars faces an uphill struggle to take the chart title – here’s hoping that if he wins, they let him perform the song with Fleur East.
