Chelsea must convince Didier Drogba to sign on for one more year

When popping up to score Chelsea’s second goal of the game against Tottenham on Tuesday, the Blues’ veteran Ivorian striker confirmed that there is plenty of life left in this old Drog yet.

Didier Drogba has been singled out by manager Jose Mourinho for praise for his willingness to work for the team:

“He’s not selfish, not vain. He’s a humble guy who plays for the team, fights for the team. Fantastic. When he is on the bench and comes on for the last few minutes because the team needs someone to hold the ball up or to defend set-pieces, he does that with the same enthusiasm and spirit as he does when he starts a game against Tottenham,” he said.

But with the striker only signing a one-year contract in the summer, there is a worry that Chelsea could lose their talisman at the end of the campaign.

It is therefore paramount that Mourinho works his magic to convince the 36-year-old to sign on the dotted line for one more season at least.

The ‘Special One’ has hinted that his future is still at the club after he hangs up his boots, but it is obvious the former Galatasaray man still has plenty more to give in west London.

With five goals to his name in all competitions there is no doubting that Drogba retains plenty of his goalscoring instinct.

And it is probably no stretch to suggest that he would walk into the match-day squad of most other Premier League sides, and with egos running high in football these days, Drogba appears an anomaly for a player of his quality.

The Stamford Bridge outfit tend to adopt a lone striker approach with the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian providing support from behind on from the wings, so there is little room for another striker to start alongside Diego Costa.

With Drogba content to come off the bench and fill in the starting void when Costa (albeit fairly regularly) succumbs to injury, it is hard to see who Chelsea could get in of similar quality to fill the void, who wouldn’t kick up a stink about not starting games.

Having picked up 10 trophies in his spell leading the line at Stamford Bridge there appears to be plenty of chances for the iconic striker to add to that tally this season, but Chelsea must go out of their way to squeeze another year of football out of him.
